Uganda’s Historical Sites

Paleontological sites

Paleontological Historical site in Uganda are mainly found in Karamojoa and Mt. Elogon regions  contain fossils sites which have made Uganda one of the countries in the cradle of human kind is traced and the specimen was named Morotopithecus bishop 20 years ago and was collected in one of the sites along Mt Moroto . Other ancient fossils sites are in Mt Napak and Bukawa in the eastern Uganda Kikorongo and the Kazinga channel in western Uganda .

Archaeological sities

Uganda is famous for its archaeological sites of both stone and iron age for example;

Ngongezi rocks shelter.

It’s found along the Kagera river  Nshongezi  in Isingiro district. It’s a stone age site which bears soot coating which indicates that people who lived their made fire to roast meat and cook food .near this site there is an lsland called kanstyore in the kagera river.its also a cultural site.

Nyero rock painting.

Its 9km west of kumi district in estern Uganda ,its an early stone age site and rock painting found in three rock shelters where some of the paintings represt canoes ,animals and oyher art impressions . other rockspaintings similar to nyero  are found in karamoja palisa and kaberamaido districts of eastern Uganda and louli lsland in lake Victoria.

The ntugi mounds and the basin

Its located 56kms west of Masaka town in central Uganda .the site dates to the 11th century and is the oldest sites associated wuith the Bacwezi and the are three archaeological features which its famous for  two man made mounds a female and a male and a basin locally known as Bwogero. According to the excavations which were carried out on the two Munds and found out that they are made of pileups pf ash, pttery  and bone which date between the 11th and 16th centuries.

Bigo bya mugenyi.

Its 16km north of ntusi , bigo bya mugengi is accessible by a seasonal road up to the kabeho village past kabukongote hill across kakinga river valley river valley. Its related sites of kanonko  15kms to the north ,munso za kateboha and kibongo are made extensive earthworks of French systems.

Munga za kateboha

This site is located 3km north of Kakumiro trading centre in Kibale district. The site derives its name from a legendary king called Kateboha  who was a Bacwezi  ruler of the region. The significant feature at the site is the hole in the rock measuring 2m deep which is referred to as the Kateboha’s beer pot and the  Bikegete rock shelter that features in the `inner trench of the earth works hence making it a perfect touristic attraction.

Nakayima tree

Its sited 2kms from mubende twon on top of mubende hill within the roots of an ancient tree in history  its refered to as ”witch tree”. Nakaima was the wife to ndahura the first mucwezi king of the empire of kitara and when the bacwezi  disappeared she became the intermediary   of the husband .this site is a very active shrine and visted throught the year.

Kibiro salt producing village.

Its situated along the eastern shore of lake albert 1km down the escarpment 9km from the kigorobya twon council from kigorobya town council which is iself 22km from homia twon in hoima distrac. Its amixed site with both natural and archaeological sites a contemporary settlement and fishing village whose population depends on salt production using traditional mehods and on fishing in lake albert for the last 900years

Tanda pits

Found in tanda near Miyana town district. Tanda  pits are numerous, deep, circular holes which are associated with the kintu traditions in the baganda mythology. They are said to be Walumbes pits and the site is an active shrine of the Lubaale cult, a traditional baganda religious group . the site has got spears ,arrows, hammers pieces of back cloth ,skins, cow ghee  at the site used as offertories which makes it attractive.

Bweyorere capital site

Located 15kms from Mbarara town off the old Mbarara –kabala  route , Bweyorere is a later an  iron age archaeological site which was  occupied by the two kings of ankole kingdom .its one of the  most attractive stone age site due to its background.

Natural Historical sities

SOURCE OF WORLD’S LONGEST RIVER

In Jinja town, you may visit the source of the world’s longest river (Nile River) and see the point where The Mighty River Nile starts its journey through Sudan, Egypt and on to Mediterranean sea. It is the point where John speke the first European explore to come to Uganda  managed to see the point where the  River Nile water  separates  from lake Victoria water. A boat ride is

Amabare ga mugore.

These rocks are found in nyakashashara subcounty ,nyabushezi county,in kiruhura district .the gigantic series of rocks are digned like a procession of the bride entourage hence the reference made of them as the stones of the bride based on tradition and background of the bacwezi pantheon.

Amabare ga nyinamwiru

They are found near nyakasura school 9kms west of fortportal twon in kabarole district. It’s a limestone which has stalagamites and stalactites .in the process of the stalacities .in the process of stalacities dripping calcium carbonate forms stalagamities dwon below . they are refereed to as breasts of nyinamwiru the mother of ndahura the frist mucewzi king of the kitala empire . it’s a tourist attraction due  to the watwer falls in the rock and the background of the site.

Semwema rockshelter.

2kms west of kakumiio trading centre and 1km east of munsa earthworks in kibale  apart from being attract attraction ,its an active shrine of the bacwezi cult and underneath the rock it can accommodate about  200 people for example ,the cylindrical offertory object .however there us a tunnel within the shelter through which the visitors pass to the top to view the country side.

Sempaya hot spring

The hot springs are found in the semliki river valley below  the escapmet on the road from fortpoartal to bundibugyo twon  .these are lcated at two areas where on e is refered to as the ma le and the female  . the inhabitants of bundibugyo district carryout cultural ceremonies and its famous touristic attraction.

Bugona tree.

This lone ever green tree which can be seen within distance of 30kms of the plateau land 20kms east of  rubaare trading center on the mbarara –kabala road highway .this site is an active shrine of religious cult known as the Balangi who like the the bacewzi cult gahr at the site .its one of th e best touristics  attraction due to its background and traditional belts.

Traditional Historical sites:

 Kasubi tombs

The most famous historical site destination It was originally caled nubugaala and later changed by muteesa 1 when he took over power  in 1882 in a vallege in kyagwe were he grew up . it’s a traditionall site in an urban setting  5kms in the southwest of kampala city, the cape of Uganda .last four kings ( te sekabaka of the kingdom of Buganda) namely muteesa 1 1865-1884,Daniel muwaga 11 1884-1897, daudi chwa 11 1897-1939 and fredwick mutessa 11 1939-1966 are buried in this dome shaped  grass thatched house  known as muzibu azaaala mpaga .the reed and ring work which respents the 52 clans of the banganda and they equally long and straight poles  rapped with barkcloth
